What is it? Conceived as a world car, the new Malibu will be offered with some 10 different four and six-cylinder engines in markets around the planet, variously powered by gasoline, diesel, and liquid propane.

The focus for North America is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. It will make in excess of 190 hp, according to GM.

The proportions have changed on the redesigned car. The wheelbase is 4.5-inches shorter than in the older car, bt the track has increased by 2 inches. Significant attention has been spent on aerodynamics. GM is employing wind-cheating techniques such as adjustable vent flaps that will lower at speed to help achieve a .28 coefficient of drag, on par with some of the most efficient designs.

For maximum fuel economy GM is also introducing a Malibu Eco trim line. It will use a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that employs the eAssist technology that GM debuted on the Buick LaCrosse. The system will store power in lithium ion batteries that provide additional power when needed, in addtion to cutting off fuel delivery when coasting and employing stop-start technology. All of this adds up to 26 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.

What is new or notable? One trick feature is a radio face that pivots up to reveal a six-inch deep storage area behind it.
