Comparison: 2008 Honda Accord Coupe vs 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse vs 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe
Fast FWD: Think the new crop of front-wheel-drive two-doors aren't real sport coupes? Think again.
From the February, 2008 issue of Motor Trend / By Edward Loh / Photography by Julia LaPalme
THE INTRODUCTION VIDEO: Introduction - Sport Coupes Video Comparison - Fast FWD
Two decades ago, one couldn't utter the words "front-wheel drive" and "sport coupe" without generating a few snickers from the auto snobs.
There was some justification for these chuckles. Back then, coupes like the one Honda built on the Accord platform were simply line extenders-two-door variants of monster-selling family sedans. Sure, with an added wing, upsized 15-inch alloys, and a five-speed manual transmission, they appeared a bit sportier. But with a maximum of only 120 horsepower available from the "big-block" 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the Honda Accord Coupe was clearly more poseur than racer. A peppy alternative to the family sedan? Absolutely. But a real sport coupe? Never in a million years.
Well, make that 20.
The 2008 Honda Accord Coupe is a now bona-fide sport coupe, with the specs to back it up: control-arm front suspension, six-speed manual transmission, and a 268-horsepower V-6 engine capable of churning up lung-searing clouds of tire smoke in seconds. Does it matter that it's the front wheels that are smoking and that it holds five passengers? Nope. Honda's latest coupe is the real deal, no longer a pretender to the cone. The question is, can the same be said about today's other front-drive, V-6-powered sport coupes?
We've set up a slash-and-dash comparison test to find out, pitting the latest version of the long-running Accord Coupe against relative newcomers, the 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5 SE and 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. Pontiac's G6 GXP coupe was supposed to be in the mix as well, but the lack of a manual transmission and a scheduling conflict keep it from our comparison. To thresh out their sporting credentials and determine the winner, we're running these coupes through our standard battery of instrumented tests as well as the canyons of the Santa Barbara Mountains.
CONTENDER: 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse - Sport Coupes Video Comparison - Fast FWD
2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT
Though the current generation of the Eclipse bowed way back in 2006, its spaceship styling has aged well. Our test car has been Botoxed with a body kit that makes it appear lower and wider, but even without the add-ons, the Eclipse has arguably the most aggressive look here, its gaping maw offset by fluid curves and a backside rounder than the Death Star.
Inside is less cohesive, but still offers some sporting appeal. "Certainly imparts a sports-car feel, at least with regard to the sense from behind the wheel -- the roof, dash, and door panels seem shrink-wrapped around you," says Kiino.
Too bad the Eclipse can't back up this sporty image. Despite having the largest, torquiest V-6 (3.8 liters) and optional summer sport tires, (Yokohama AVS ES100), the Eclipse is almost completely, well, eclipsed by the Altima and Accord at the track.
That it matches the Nissan's 0-to-60-mph acceleration time of 5.8 seconds is nothing to be proud of, given the Altima's inch smaller and skinnier all-season tires. The Accord is even faster, sprinting to 60 and the quarter-mile marker a tenth of a second quicker.
The Eclipse does outbrake both of its rivals by nine feet (impressive since it weighs 294 pounds more than the Altima and has 149 on the Accord) and finishes ahead of the Altima on the figure eight, but again, most of the credit must go to the wider and stickier rubber.
News from our canyon racers is worse.
"To complain about its steering feel would be to imply that any feel exists," groans St. Antoine. "At max lateral g in a tight corner, the steering feels the same as when you're pointed straight down the highway. No cornering info, almost no feedback to speak of."
"It does turn in, but only thanks to the summer tires," he continues. "The chassis is relatively compliant, so it does stay where you put it. That said, unexpected wheel movements-such as when sharply steering away from a rock and back-upset the chassis badly."
CONTENDER: 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe - Sport Coupes Video Comparison - Fast FWD
2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5 SE
Unlike the Eclipse, which received minor upgrades for 2008, the Altima and Accord coupes are all new for this year. The Altima Coupe was first out of the gate as the sophomore-year addition to the sedan's 2007 launch.
At first glance, it's a sharp-looking vehicle, blessed with the lean, clean profile and haunches seemingly grafted from the Infiniti G37.
Like its luxury cousin, the two-door Altima is eager to run-its power coming from a 3.5-liter, 270-horse V-6 that's the burliest of the bunch. Too bad its shoes are better suited for PTA meetings than track meets. The Altima's standard-equipment all-season Bridgestones are an inch smaller and 20 mm narrower than the competition's and seemingly entirely devoid of grip. Simple clutch drops set the front wheels spinning on command-hooligan fun, but not the fastest way around the track.
Still, the Altima's balanced attack of power and handling make it a favorite in Ojai. Says Kiino, "The Altima has a sweet chassis that's more willing to rotate than the Accord's. Good grip but could certainly benefit from better tires. I'd like a firmer suspension, too, but the compromise is good in this car-plenty of sport with just the right amount of luxury."
St. Antoine chimes in: "Probably the best steering in the group, though it's a bit light. Very accurate and full of feedback. Typical of Nissan, the chassis is quite well balanced, and though the Accord feels like it can corner harder and even do it easier, the Nissan is a lot of fun and very responsive."
Sounds like the Altima's sporting credentials check out, but why does it finish a close second to the Accord? On paper, their differences seem invisible, or at worst, inconsequential, but it all becomes crystal clear from the driver's seat-of the Accord.
CONTENDER: 2008 Honda Accord Coupe - Sport Coupes Video Comparison - Fast FWD
2008 Honda Accord Coupe EX-L
"Here's the Accord I know and love," crackles St. Antoine's voice over the radio, midway through his 40-minute stint in the Ojai canyons.
And there's a lot to love about the Accord. At 190.0 inches, it's 8.4 inches longer than the Altima and a whopping 11.2 inches longer than the Eclipse, with similar disparity between the wheels as well. All this extra length contributes to a much more open and airy interior, and not just for the pilot and copilot; rear seat room is impressive in this five-seater.
About the only interior criticism is the button-crazy dash; Kiino thinks the Nissan instrument panel has a cleaner, more logical layout. There's no argument the Honda's materials and fit and finish are luxurious in comparison with the others.
This richness permeates throughout the Accord and can be found in unusual places such as the engine bay. Honda is one of the few manufacturers that refuse to hide the engine under yards of plastic covers. Why would it, when it has a V-6 that looks as good as it performs?
"The Accord's V-6 is just phenomenal. Torques up well from low revs, but really runs once VTEC snaps to the performance cam," says St. Antoine. Throttle response and the engine sounds at wide-open throttle are also key; the engine's quick reactions and auditory assault let you know when you're driving it hard.
Like the six-speed manual transmission, this 3.5-liter V-6 engine is exclusive to the coupe-the sedan's six has the cylinder-deactivating VCM system that helps it get better fuel economy. Still, with an observed 17.3-mpg rating, after hours of full-throttle canyon runs and highway cruising, the Accord beats both at the pump, especially because it's the only one that doesn't require premium unleaded.
At the track, the Accord is the biggest winner, picking up every category except braking. St. Antoine sums it up nicely: "Nissan's chassis is a little better sorted over really big whoop-di-doos-the Accord tends to bottom out and then completely uncompress upon rebound. Otherwise, I'd give the edge to the Honda. It has immense front-end grip, and though the Altima carves more precisely the Accord actually tracks through high-g stuff better. Suspension almost never wiggles out of line; it's confidence-inspiring."
THE WINNER VIDEO: Conclusion - Sport Coupes Comparison Fast FWD Video Series
So there you have it. With their balanced, blistering performance, the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima coupes have proven their street cred as real sport coupes. The Accord Coupe takes the overall title, and well it should-Honda has had the benefit of over 20 years experience in this realm.
1ST PLACE: HONDA ACCORD COUPE EX-L
Slick body, screaming engine, taut chassis, and room for five. This is what a real sport coupe looks like these days.
2ND PLACE: NISSAN ALTIMA COUPE 3.5 SE
Think of it as an Infiniti G37 on the cheap. Great lines, excellent steering, and robust engine. Better tires might have made it number one.
3RD PLACE: MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE GT
Crude in this company and showing its age. If Mitsubishi could find a way to trade torque steer for steering feel, this could be a real winner.
RA of Hope
The Eclipse finished third in our comparison and is clearly showing signs of age, but good news is rising from the east. Mitsubishi calls it Concept-RA and presented it at the Detroit show in January. From the looks of things, Mitsubishi is returning to the turbocharged four-cylinder, all-wheel-drive formula that established the original Eclipse's credibility.
But this isn't merely a retro redux; Mitsubishi has stuffed the RA's fierce, cab-forward chassis with legitimate high-tech hardware. Take the 2.2-liter engine: Though it's 200 cc smaller than the current Eclipse's four-cylinder, it uses the latest direction-injection, diesel technology and a new variable diffuser, variable geometry turbocharger to make 201 horsepower and a whopping 310 pound-feet of torque. Then there's the RA's Super All-Wheel Control system; though it's similar to the system on the current Lancer Evolution, the RA gets extras including Active Suspension and Active Steering.
So is the RA a look at the next Eclipse? It certainly seems feasible. With the trend toward smaller, alternative-fuel engines, the Eclipse's return to a turbo four-cylinder powered by clean diesel makes a lot of sense. As for the trick all-wheel-drive system, we know Mitsubishi's active steering and suspension systems are already in development because they were built for early prototypes of the current Evo.
