Next generation Mazda Miata loses weight to gain appeal

The little Japanese model has come to be known as the quintessential affordable roadster and enjoys great popularity that cannot be doubted. Since the Miata has been introduced at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, it sold 900,000 units, which represents a number that puts it well ahead of other topless cars. But, as time passed, it has also taken its toll, as the model gained some extra pounds, plus a few wrinkles. This is the main reason why the Japanese engineers thought of a new generation Mazda Miata that would be lighter and smaller. Inside Line informed the brand's enthusiasts that the future Miata would be 720 pounds lighter as compared to the current version. In order to accomplish this, engineers will face the difficult task of cutting some severe corners. One of Mazda's main objectives is to bring the next-generation model closer to the 1989 Miata, in terms of weight. While the current version weighs 2,480 pounds, the 1989 model was weighing only 2,100 pounds. Furthermore, a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine is rumored to be under the hood of the car, but its specifications remain unknown, but it is said to be part of the SkyActiv line. It will be mated to a manual transmission.
