Mazda2 Road Test

The new Mazda2 was introduced to European customers in 2007, having lost 100kg of weight. This was thanks to Mazda's Program Manager Shigeo Mizuno's aim to returning to the fundamental compact car form, a small hatchback whilst making significant weight reductions to achieve low fuel consumption and low CO2 emissions. The following year, the Mazda2 went on to be awarded 5 stars by Euro NCAP as well as being named 2008 World Car of the Year.

The Mazda2 range consists of nine models, in both three and five door body styles, with the choice of a manual or automatic transmission. One diesel and three petrol engines are available, with four equipment levels - TS Air Con, TS2, Tamura and Sport.
The exterior now features a larger front Mazda badge – bringing it in line with the rest of the Mazda range - as well as a larger five-point grille. The interior sees a new instrument panel with 'blackout' finish dials and chrome rings, seat patterns and seat fabric colours, the centre stack is finished in piano black.
The front view of the car features the 'family face', and is instantly recognisable as a Mazda, with wrap around headlights which lead the eye down the length of the car. Along its length is the same rising belt line as the original Mazda2, which helps suggest the idea of movement.
Prices for the Mazda2 start at £10,305 on the road, with the TS2 model priced from £11,130 and the Sport model from £12,945. All models come, as standard, with dual front airbags, air conditioning, electric front windows CD radio (with auxiliary jack) and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm.
The Mazda2 TS2 model for this test also comes with 15 inch alloy wheels, side and curtain airbags, leather steering wheel with audio controls, trip computer with speed alarm and for the automatic model, Dynamic Stability Control.
For the top of the range Sport model, front fog lights, auto-lights and wipers, cruise control, automatic climate control air-conditioning, electric rear windows and DSC are standard features.
