افتراضي 2011 Dodge Avenger SXT Plus Review

The latest-generation Dodge Avenger went on sale a few years back complete with an extra set of doors that, like the new Charger, effectively turned the once-coupe model into a new four-door.

For 2011, Dodge is pushing forward with a Fiat-powered product update rampage that’s restyled and newly equipped the Avenger into what the automaker promises is the best one yet. New looks, equipment, powertrain hardware, and interior trimmings are all on board.

A sedan for budget-minded superheroes
And with a name like “Avenger,” you can’t help but feel like a bit of a villain-fighting superhero when you drive this care – and you'll definitely look the part.

No, not because of the mask and uncomfortably tight spandex, but because of the chrome wheels, tidy new grille, dual exhaust, and LED brake lights. The body is decidedly blocky and not rounded off at every edge, which works towards giving the Dodge Avenger SXT a much more muscular look. For something modestly priced, this car packs heaps of visual testosterone.

Older folks find it looks childish and overdone. Younger folks say it looks “sick” or “wicked”. If your age lies somewhere in between, you’ll likely appreciate the sensibility of the four-door body balanced against youthful, tuner-style touches like a deep fascia and large rear spoiler.

On board—upscale and unique
Inside your secret lair, (aka the Avenger’s cabin) you’ll find an upscale and unique atmosphere. Our tester featured a sunroof, plenty of storage for your various crime-fighting tools, and full multimedia connectivity for quick access to your iPod-stored theme song.

Heated cloth seats keep you from freezing your Lycra-clad tushy off, and an advanced, high-tech and voice-controlled communications system is tied in with the infotainment and stereo.

Some decorative stitching and soft-touch surfaces help deliver a premium look and feel. Ditto for the tester’s khaki and black colour scheme.

Space will prove adequate for four adults, and no problems were noted with entry or exit. Additionally, trunk space should prove adequate for one or two non-comically-obese-tied-up bad guys. Note that drivers will have to use their spidey senses to avoid whacking something in reverse, since rearward visibility is poor.

Potent Pentastar Power
What’s not poorly in the least is what you'll find under the hood. With Chrysler’s new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 optionally on board, aspiring superheroes will benefit from a whopping 283 horsepower. A six-speed manual-mode automatic is standard, meaning drivers can call for their own gearshifts while ripping along to the nearest kitty stuck in a tree.

The Avenger isn’t a corner-carving monster, but the straight-line performance really is impressive. Stand on the throttle, and it’ll vaporize its tires through first and second gear, flinging itself up to the speed limit and beyond in very quick order. Smooth and potent acceleration are available at any romp of the throttle, though as is the norm in this segment, driver-summoned gearshifts aren’t rev-matched or particularly quick to engage.

The first three gears are spaced tightly together, meaning the Avenger stays right in its powerband until well over 100 km/h. If you’ve got a pulse, you’ll love the performance.

Driven gently for your 9-to-5 routine, Avenger turns in decent mileage relative to its power output and also provides a slightly sporty, but mainly compliant and relaxing, ride over most surfaces. It’s also quiet on the highway, and offers great headlight performance at night.

My overall average mileage during the course of a 2,000-kilometre, highway-intensive test drive landed at 10.3 L/100 km—which is respectable indeed.

A strange gripe
This writer’s biggest complaint dealt with the engine. Though it turns the Avenger into a tire-frying menace to society on command, it’s simply too darn quiet. There’s no aggressive wail, no snorty exhaust sound effects, and no deep roar from the intake. Aurally, the opened-up Pentastar just emits a mild hum overlapped by the sound of rapidly spinning accessory belts and camshafts.

Those after some ferocity in the sound department can have their tech-savvy butler add intake and exhaust modifications to taste. Those prioritizing a relaxing, quiet driving experience will find no issue.

Other complaints include hefty torque steer (fire up those superhero forearms), and the lack of a trunk-closer handle. You’ll smudge the outside of the trunk lid with your fingertips every time you close it.

Youthful, fun, expressive
Ultimately, the main draws to this machine (superhero or not) will be its styling, newly-updated interior and exterior looks, and a good dose of value for the money. Oh, and the delightfully fun, expressive and youthful character you won’t find in the Malibu, Accord or Camry, which encompass the potent V6 engine and associated tire-melting shenanigans—if you’re so inclined.

With pricing from the mid-$27,000 range with V6 power for a generously-equipped SXT Plus model, there’s some serious bang for the buck happening here.

If that sounds like your thing, be sure to give the latest Avenger a test drive. Just be careful not to close the door on your cape.
