The new car's engine engine was based on the one fitted in the Fiat 124 Sport^[3]: a 1608 cc DOHC unit with 90 bhp. The 125 was equipped with a Solex carburettor. The car was fitted with an alternator^[3], reflecting the twin headlights and the increasing number of energy intensive electrical components appearing on cars at this time. Other noteworthy features included the elecromagnetic cooling fan clutch^[


The Special was facelifted in 1970 using pretty much the same trim as the 125S, but both front and rear lights were new, although based on the one's used on the 125. A three-speed automatic transmission also became available as an option

Lampredi and Fiat's marketers also attempted a larger front-drive car, using most of the 128 technology but adapting it to a restyled Fiat 124 shell that had razor-edge styling more similar to the earlier Fiat 1500. The A111 didn't take though, and few were sold - fewer still outside of Italy. It was hoped that this car might encourage people who disliked the preponderance of Fiats in the home market to buy a Fiat that wasn't a Fiat. At that time, Fiat controlled an astounding 89% of Italy's domestic sales.
