Rumormill: Honda CR-Z Type-R in the works
Filed under: Hybrid, Performance, Europe, Japan, Tokyo Motor Show, Hatchback, Honda, UK, Rumormill 2011 Honda CR-Z - Click above for high-res image gallery The rumormongers at AutoExpress are at it again, donning their speculative fedoras and suggesting that a 200-horsepower Honda CR-Z Type-R is on the way. But if you were hoping for a K20 swap to ditch the hybrid setup, you're in for a disappointment. In stock form, the production CR-Z unveiled in Detroit makes due with a 102 hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder mated to an electric motor good for an additional 20 ponies. If AE is to be believed, Honda and its internal tuning partner, Mugen, plans to up the output of the stock four-pot to approximately 150 hp. Since the CR-Z was designed from the onset to be a hybrid, apparently Honda just can't swap in the 2.0-liter engine from the Euro-Civic and call it a day. Instead, a beefed-up electric motor will be fitted - reportedly good for another 50 hp - and bringing total output up to 200 hp. Naturally, the transformation won't just be under the hood. A reworked suspension, upgraded brakes and a smattering of body mods will be included in the package, along with an additional driving mode (bringing the total to three), "Sport Plus" which will reportedly modify throttle response, steering, the start-stop system and the electric motor assist. If the Type-R comes to fruition, expect it to debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, with the production version arriving sometime in 2012. JDM Toyota Passo/Daihatsu Boon hatchlets get redesigned
Filed under: Budget, Japan, Hatchback, Toyota, Daihatsu 2010 Daihatsu Boon - Click above for high-res image gallery The twin hatchbacks known as the Toyota Passo and Daihatsu Boon in the JDM sphere have been launched in their all-new guises. The Toyota version comes in two flavors, Passo and Passo + Hanna, the latter of which gets extra features like projector headlights. It will also be available in two-wheel and all-wheel drive variants, and on top of that comes in a JDM-bonanza of trim levels such as Modellista and TRD Sportivo. Being sister cars the Daihatsu will offer the same possible features, but with a much lower projected sales volume - 500 to the Toyota's 6,500 - the Boon will come in three versions as opposed to the Toyota's six. Engine choices are a 1.0-liter, 68-horsepower lump or a 1.3-liter, 94-hp motor, both running through a CVT. The Passo starts at ¥1,000,000 ($10,971 U.S.). You can read about both in the lengthy releases after the jump, and check them out in the gallery of high-res photos below. Top tip, Eralp! Pics Aplenty: Mitsubishi RVR Crossover
Filed under: Budget, Geneva Motor Show, Europe, Japan, Crossover, Mitsubishi Mitsubishi RVR Crossover - Click above for high-res image gallery Mitsubishi has officially rolled out the Japanese market version of its new RVR crossover, which will also be dubbed ASX for the European market when it goes on sale later this year. The automaker has said that it has plans to bring the new small CUV to the United States, but no official nomenclature has been confirmed for the vehicle that will land on our shores. The European version will officially debut to the public at next month's Geneva Motor Show. In Japan, the RVR is offered with a new 1.8-liter gasoline four, producing 139 horsepower and mated to a continuously variable transmission with column-mounted paddle shifters. Both front- and all-wheel drive versions will be available, and earlier reports have stated that European customers will have the choice of a few diesel powerplants, including a 1.8-liter unit mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Have a click through our gallery to see the new Mitsubishi crossover from all angles, and expect more photos and information live from the Geneva show floor next month. Geneva 2010: Subaru Impreza XV looks buffer, not any better
Filed under: Budget, Geneva Motor Show, Japan, Crossover, Hatchback, Spyker, Diesel Subaru Impreza XV - click above for high-res image gallery Like the recently redesigned Forester and Outback, the Impreza XV unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this week gives us yet another Subaru that looks more SUV-like than its predecessor. Subaru pulled this trick off by giving the XV a heftier-looking grille, beefier wheel arches, thicker, more purposeful-looking roof rails and a new, boomerang-look rear spoiler. You'll also notice the little bumperettes up front flanking the new grille. Don't like the way it looks? Don't worry, as the Impreza XV will not be headed our (U.S.) way. However, you're going to have to learn to live with it should you live in Europe. That won't be too hard to do as the XV ships with your choice of either a peppy 2.0-liter boxer gas engine or torquey turbo-diesle boxer mill, the latter motivator being the power plant that best compliments the new XV's so-so trucky looks. Spoon developing parts for Honda CR-Z
Filed under: Aftermarket, Hybrid, Japan, Hatchback, Honda Spoon Honda CR-Z - Click above for image gallery With Honda's in-house parts department in the game and Mugen developing it's own line of kit for the CR-Z, the tuner trifecta is almost complete with the release of Spoon's performance parts for Honda's hybrid hatch. While we thought bright blue wheels went out of vogue (even in the U.S.) in 2008, Spoon has coated its CR93 rollers in the company's signature hue, along with upgraded calipers clamping onto 15-inch slotted discs. A ride height lowered by 50mm comes courtesy of front coilovers and a spring and shock combo in the rear, while the body has been subtly altered with the addition of a carbon fiber hood, mirrors and front lip spoiler. More importantly, a new N1 exhaust has been fitted and Spoon is fiddling with the ECU to churn out a few extra (and much-needed) ponies. There's no word on what the rejiggered computer and exhaust is good for power-wise or how Spoon is manipulating the hybrid drive system to boost performance, but considering the company's past endeavors, we're expecting good things.
