2011 World Car Awards: How close it was
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Alfa Romeo ![]() On Thursday the 21st of April, the seventh annual World Car Awards were given out in a ceremony at the New York International Auto Show that was duly covered by Autoblog. Full disclosure: I, Matt Davis, European Editor of this online obsession Autoblog, am both a co-founder and co-chair of the World Car Awards, and I intend to shamelessly soapbox herein about the WCAs, at least until the bosses toss me out on the sidewalk. The WCAs comprise four awards: World Green Car, World Car Design, World Performance Car, and overall World Car of the Year - known as the WCotY. There is no other widely known award even remotely like this, as all four take into account truly global cars from every region of the world. The overall WCotY, in particular, pits cars of every type from every make on the globe, some of which may not be available in the English-speaking world, against one another and, in the end, we 66 international jurors shake out a winner, two runners-up, and the rest. AdSpotting: BMW 5 Series "Refuel" reintroduces us to The Ultimate Driving Machine
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, BMW, Luxury ![]() Company: BMWa Brand: BMW Medium: TV Ad Agency: Grey West Product: 2011 5 Series Campaign: 5 Series "Refuel" What We Like: The swagger is back at BMW. After more than a year of fooling around with "Joy" as a lead ad positioning, a new marketing team at the German automaker is re-emphasizing "The Ultimate Driving Machine" as the brand's central positioning. The 30-second ad contains what many BMW followers like - a fast car and a big plane. No, the plane, which looks to be a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, is not hovering so close to the 5 that it could fill the guy's coffee cup. But the CGI is good enough to pull off the visual trick. What We Don't Like: Not much at all. Getting a story and message across in a 30-second TV ad is not easy. But BMW and this ad agency, Grey West, did a nice job of conveying a fuel efficiency story. Strategy: BMW marketing chief Dan Creed, who took over at BMW North America a few months ago, is all about re-affirming "The Ultimate Driving Machine" as Bimmer's main message. At the New York Auto Show, he walked us to the front of BMW's stand to look at a giant rendering of the ad slogan, which dates back to the early 1970s. At last year's show, there was a giant banner that proclaimed "Joy of Driving." "We know there is a lot of joy in driving a BMW, but we are going to show it in pictures and film rather than say it," says Creed. It's worth noting that as fun as this ad is, the message is about the 5 Series' fuel economy, not the horsepower. BMW is trying to broaden its message to be more inclusive of men and women, as well as tell its story about its investments in the South Carolina plant that produces X3 and X5. But Creed also wants the brand and the cars to show some leg when it comes to marketing and advertising. BMW remains an exciting brand, and a premiere stable of driving machines. That shouldn't be lost when telling the broader story. BMW is kicking off a review for a new ad agency. It parted ways with Austin-based GSD&M late last year. New York-based Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal + Partners produced last February's Super Bowl ads. Grey West, which has handled BMW's retail and pre-owned advertising since 2008, produced the ad and will presumably get a crack at the whole enchilada. Grade: A- Watch the commercial after the jump and give it your own grade below. Motor Trend gets dirty with the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon, Porsche Panamera Turbo and BMW X6 M
Filed under: Performance, Wagon, Etc., Videos, Crossover, Hatchback, BMW, Cadillac, Porsche, Luxury ![]() 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon in the desert - Click above to watch video after the jump True to its word, Motor Trend has released a follow-up video to its three-way drag race between the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon, the Porsche Panamera Turbo and the BMW X6 M, though this isn't exactly your run-of-the-mill comparison test. Given the quirkiness of the vehicles at hand, MT took all three vehicles out to a dry lake bed for a little fun in the sun. If you like watching high-dollar, high-horsepower cars get down and dirty, you'll want to check out the video after the jump. It's hosted by none other than our pal Jonny Lieberman, and he's even wearing proper footwear this time around. So, which of these automotive oddities came out on top? You'll have to check out the video to see for yourself. BMW Concept C scooter coming to America
Filed under: BMW, Motorcycle ![]() BMW Motorrad Concept C - Click above for high-res image gallery You may remember the Concept C from last year. It was BMW Motorrad's vision of what a large motor scooter could look like, and now it's headed into production. Our friends at Hell for Leather report that a production version of the Concept C will be unveiled at major motorbike shows after the summer. And once it's in production, it'll likely get a different name, but after that it's headed for the United States. Whether the LED headlights, LCD "dashboard" monitors and ABS disc brakes will make it onto the production version remains to be seen. The blue-treaded tires, though, almost definitely won't. BMW X1 won't go on sale in U.S. until late 2012
![]() BMW X1 - Click above for high-res image gallery The BMW X1 compact crossover went on sale in Europe in November 2009, and ever since its launch, we've heard plenty of reports about the CUV's on-sale date being pushed back here in the United States. The X1 is in very high demand in Europe, and limited supplies are what's causing the crossover's launch here in the U.S. to be delayed. Automotive News now reports that the X1 will not arrive on our shores until the end of 2012. BMW had initially planned to launch the X1 in the U.S. earlier this year. Another key factor for the X1's late arrival in the U.S. is strong early demand for the larger X3 crossover, which received a complete overhaul for the 2011 model year. BMW sold 5,710 X3s in the first quarter of 2011, compared to 1,355 units in Q1 2010. Even with its delay here in the U.S., the X1 is still scheduled to arrive at Canadian dealerships in the very near future.
