Volkswagen’s
newly-redesigned retromobile will start at $19,765 for the 170 hp 2.5 five-cylinder version, including VW’s customary $770 destination charge, with the 200 hp 2.0 TSI turbo version starting at $24,765, including destination. Although VW has announced availability of the TDI diesel in the new Beetle, pricing was not announced for the oil-burner.
Comprehensively updated for 2012, the new model has a more muscular, chiseled appearance compared to its cartoonish predecessor. VW is hoping the new styling some have described as “
Porsche-like” will attract more male customers, as the previous model’s customer base skewed heavily female.
Standard
features on the 2012 model include split-folding rear seats, 17-inch alloy wheels , and an auxiliary input for the eight-speaker sound system. Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, heated front seats, and three-color interior ambient lighting are optional on the 2.5 and standard on the turbo. Available on the 2.5 and standard on the turbo is the “kaeferfach” upper glovebox reminiscent of the original Beetle.
