According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,
Volkswagen is recalling 12,612
Routan minivans for an ignition fault. The recall covers 2010 model year vehicles manufactured between October 2009 and June 2010, and NHTSA says that the vehicles' ignitions may inadvertently switch between "run" and "accessory," effectively shutting off the engine.
If that sounds familiar, it should.
Chrysler, the automaker that makes the Routan for Volkswagen,
recently announced a recall covering nearly 250,000
Dodge Grand Caravan and
Journey models for the exact same issue.
NHTSA is concerned that if the ignition turns off the engine in the Routan, an accident could occur, though at this point it's unclear if any injuries have resulted from the default.
Volkswagen will replace the ignition modules free of charge, and the recall campaign is expected to get under way during April of this year.
Hit the jump for the full recall notice.
