The 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupe is serving duty as one of the safety cars for the 2011 MotoGP Championship, which kicks off this weekend at the Grand Prix of Qatar. The 1M Coupe that will be handling safety car duties has been smartened up a little from stock, starting with an Akrapovic sport exhaust.

BMW also added a big rear wing, a chin spoiler and BMW Motorsport's fabled tri-color paint scheme. To cap the look off, BMW has finished the wheels and exhaust tips in black. No word yet on whether the accessories on the MotoGP pace car will be made available to the public, or if this car is a one-shot deal. Check out more pics of the safety car by visiting our friends at 1Addicts (link below).
Video: BMW creates radio controlled tribute to culture
BMW has joined forces with graphic-designer Stephan Sagmeister to celebrate the company's 40-year commitment to culture the world over. The German automaker is currently sponsoring over 100 artistic endeavors around the globe, and Sagmeister cooked up a pretty clever way to add to the stack. BMW documented the company's history as a patron in a new tome by the decidedly unpretentious title CULTURE. But this isn't just any old book. Aside from being personally signed by Sagmeister himself, the books all feature an individual cover design that, when arranged, would create a seven-by-seven graphic image of the BMW headquarters in Munich.

But wait, there's more.

As it turns out, each book also comes with its own remote-control running gear. If you get bored reading about the hordes of musicians, artists and designers that BMW has sponsored over the years, you can simply flop the book on the floor and commence to driving it about. Sounds like a winner to us. Hit the jump for the full press blast as well as a video of Sagmeister signing the volumes.
Video: Drifting BMW i3 proves rear-wheel drive cars have more fun
Footage from cold-weather testing of the BMW i3 in Sweden has surfaced, showcasing the all-electric city car's rear-wheel-drive platform and penchant for getting sideways. These are still early tests, as the full production i3 isn't expected to be ready until 2013.

Still, with 150 horsepower on tap from a rear-mounted electric lump, the little BMW could well be a barrel of laughs, as well as an environmentally-responsible mode of transportation. Of course, we wouldn't expect much range with these kinds of antics...

The BMW i3 sports an aluminum body around a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic passenger compartment, and will be considered a premium micro car when it hits showrooms. How premium? Expect the price tag to creep past $40,000. See how much fun electric drifting can be in the video after the break.
BMW pondering first Latin America plant?

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, BMW, South America
BMW may be planning to set up a new manufacturing facility in Brazil. The automaker currently only sells around 10,000 units per year in the South American country, but BMW has seen sales leap by 50 percent annually in the market for the past few years. According to Reuters, standards of living in Brazil are increasing at a rapid pace as the country prepares to host both the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. Those increases have helped to fuel light vehicle sales, which ticked up by 11 percent in 2010 to 3.33 million units. That figure surpasses even Germany's appetite for passenger cars.

If BMW does decide to set up camp in the southern hemisphere, odds are the company will simply outfit its Manaus motorcycle manufacturing facility to handle assembly of completely knocked-down vehicle kits, at least at first. Should sales increase by leaps and bounds, Reuters reports that BMW would consider a full-fledged manufacturing facility to help satiate demand. The company says that sales of as little as 50,000 units could make such a move worthwhile.
Meet the other BMW with a bed: Stuart Appleby's M5 Ute
Turns out the BMW M3 pickup we showed you yesterday isn't the first BMW to be turned into a sport pickup. Back in 2008, PGA Tour golfer Stuart Appleby had his E39 BMW M5 turned into a ute by Australian custom shop Southern Rod.

Appleby has a deep-seated love of utes from his childhood on an Australian dairy farm, and has loved M cars since he first laid eyes on them. Appleby has a history of tearing into his rides, trying to squeeze each extra pony from them. His first M5 hadn't gone 4,500 miles before the engine was torn down and pushed to 460 horsepower.

The build was finished in October 2008, and used an undamaged M5 to make a factory-looking build as easy as possible. The build took months and left no stone unturned making sure the car retained its original stiffness and functioned like a normal Ute.

We dig the finished product, and we dig that Appleby doesn't care what people think of it. Along the way, the car got a sport suspension to go along with the 460-horsepower engine, thanks to a chip, headers and exhaust.

Pics Aplenty: BMW 1 M MotoGP safety car
The new BMW 1 M is a sports coupe we've all been waiting for the Roundel-badged German automaker. Sure, it could be lighter or a little cheaper, but by all accounts, it has the driving-sensation meter bouncing off "Awesome." To tout its new performance machine, BMW has tarted one up in classic red, white and blue ///M livery, and turned it into a safety car for MotoGP.

This is more than just a paint job, however, as only the engine and transmission from the production car have been carried over. More weight has been shaved thanks to the use of carbon fiber and polycarbonate, while a titanium exhaust setup takes the place of the standard noisemaker. Out back, an adjustable rear wing sits on the trunk.

On the inside, the BMW 1 M Safety Car is fitted with a roll cage, a pair of racing buckets and a six-point harness. Underneath the skin, BMW has revamped the suspension and beefed up the brakes. The result is a truly track-ready 1 M that might just draw some attention away from the insane riders of the MotoGP series.
Confirmed: BMW M3 pickup on N?¼rburgring is an April Fool's gift
We've gotten right to the core of the situation regarding the fly-in-the-ointment BMW M3 pickup spotted doing what M3s do around the Nürburgring last week.

In a chat with BMW's Munich head of product communications, Dirk Arnold, he offered up this quote: "Ah, yes, everyone's been talking about that pickup. But, no, this is... how you call it, an April Fool's Joke" [in German "Aprilscherz" - ed.]. There will be no M3 pickup in our futures, kids. But then Arnold sort of overcommunicated to us by dangling one of those "...in this generation" qualifiers. He then also managed to immediately clarify, "It is hugely doubtful that BMW will ever during our lives produce such a vehicle, in any segment." Oh, pooh.

What about a publicity stunt entering the one-off in the Australian V8 Ute racing series? (Honestly one of the most entertaining racing series on the planet based on our one trip to witness it.) "Well," chortled Arnold, "we have the one unit available if they'd be interested, don't we?"

On April 1, a press function has been organized near Munich to show off the future M5 "concept," plus the current M3 and a whole series of unproduced M3-based prototypes, including, says Arnold, one folding hardtop variant that is not the one we all think it is. There will also be the mischievous pickup in attendance.

We then asked for a drive exclusive in Munich on April 1 with the pickup and Arnold returned our serve with "If I did that, then I'd have every journalist in the world calling me to do the same."

Must be nice to have the largesse to build and race one-off 414-horsepower M3 variants (444-hp with the 4.4-liter V8 used in the GTS version) that will never see public roads.
